The Growing Threat of Fraud: Staying Vigilant in the Age of AI
Fraud attempts are becoming more frequent, sophisticated, and difficult to recognize. Our firm receives numerous calls involving individuals who claim to represent power companies, trusted businesses, or even clients themselves. Their goal is often to create urgency, gain trust, and persuade someone to disclose sensitive information or transfer money.
Artificial intelligence is making these schemes more convincing. Fraudsters can now use AI and other technologies to:
- Spoof legitimate phone numbers so calls appear to come from a trusted source.
- Clone a person’s voice using a short audio sample.
- Create realistic emails that imitate an individual’s tone and writing style.
- Replicate company branding, email signatures, invoices, and payment instructions.
- Use personal information found online to make a request sound credible.
A familiar name, number, voice, or email address is no longer sufficient proof that a communication is genuine.
Warning Signs to Watch For
Be especially cautious when someone:
- Demands immediate payment or creates a sense of urgency.
- Threatens to disconnect a service or impose a penalty.
- Requests payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or an unfamiliar account.
- Asks for passwords, verification codes, banking details, or other sensitive information.
- Provides new or unexpected payment instructions.
- Discourages you from contacting another person to confirm the request.
- Contacts you from a familiar number or address but makes an unusual request.
Even when a message appears to come from someone you know, pause before acting.
Stop, Verify, and Protect Yourself
If you receive a suspicious or unexpected request, do not rely on the contact information provided in the message. Instead, use a phone number, email address, or website you already know to be legitimate.
Before sending money or sharing confidential information:
- Stop and review the request carefully.
- Verify the person’s identity through a separate, trusted communication channel.
- Confirm changes to payment instructions verbally using a known phone number.
- Never share passwords or one-time security codes.
- Contact our firm directly if a request appears to involve your account, finances, or confidential information.
If something feels unusual, it is always appropriate to slow down and ask questions.
Our Commitment to Our Clients
Protecting our clients and their information remains a priority. We continue to exercise due diligence, review unusual requests, follow verification procedures, and remain alert to emerging fraud tactics.
However, security is strongest when we work together. We urge every client to remain vigilant, verify unexpected communications, and contact us directly when there is any doubt. Taking a few extra minutes to confirm a request can prevent significant financial loss and protect sensitive information.
Fraud tactics will continue to evolve, but awareness, caution, and consistent verification remain some of our strongest defenses.
